The decision to move the existing Korea Coast Guard Academy from inland to a new site close to the sea made many opportunities to the future cadets and training programs. A new site was selected along Korea’s south sea where distinctive water, mountain, and landscape features all channelled by spectacular views. The program called for a headquarters building, educational components and several specialized research/training centers. Cadets’ residential dormitories, outdoor recreational and training grounds will also be provided. This new campus is intended to represent the new vision of the Academy. Symbolic logo of the academy - sea eagle- was the inspiration for the image of the new campus. A new symbol of the project -‘The Wing’- was derived from the concept of ‘stronger, faster, and green institution. Thus, the headquarters building was located in the most prominent portion of the site affording it a strong hierarchical position, with the ceremonial field and other facilities built in a harmonious manner in support of it. The campus core was placed at the center of the natural axis linking a prominent hill and the reservoir - natural elements that had to be preserved - with the two wings placed on usable land on both sides. With circulation of the campus core successfully integrating education, research and administration, users are able to move quickly and safely under all climatic conditions at the same time ensuring the independence of each program function.
